How To Leverage Your Business Relationships

What does it mean to leverage your business relationships? What can you do to leverage your business relationships?

Although this may sound alarming to some, think about it, when you shop…you want to experience great customer service, correct?! Getting to know people and building great relationships can lead to many great opportunities especially as a business owner. I think this is very important when it comes to leveraging business relationships.

Some people make decisions to work with you on projects based on your relationship or the impression you left on them.

Think of it as a win win situation, building great relationships with those in your networks can be key to referrals or other great business opportunities.

Honesty and integrity, among other things, will take you a long way in any relationship!

Bottom line is, leveraging your business relationships can be a good thing depending on how you choose to do it.

A few tips to start leveraging your business relationships:

  • Work with other entrepreneurs
  • Be valuable
  • Know your business goals
  • Engage with others online and offline

Meet Teen Entrepreneur Miss Taylor Harrell, the Winner of My Girlfriends House, Teenpreneur Challenge

This past weekend, I had the opportunity of working on a project that is near and dear to the Business Minded Womens’ heart apart of our mission is supporting young entrepreneurs in their businesses. I was able to work with My Girlfriend’s House, a non-profit organization of a community of women supporting and empowering each other. I was honored to sit on a sharktank panel with 3 other professionals as 6 teen entrepreneurs pitched their businesses to us and they did an amazing job doing so!

HOWever, when I tell you this was not easy at all, IT WAS NOT EASY…AT ALL!

All of the young ladies ranged in age from 11-16, they all had great businesses and business plans, unfortunately, there could only be one winner.

One young lady stood out the most to us, she showed great confidence and knowledge of her price points and products.

The winner of the teen entrepreneur challenge was 12 -year -old, Miss Taylor

Harrell, president and founder of her boutique @beadzfrmtay, her business creates customized bracelets, ankle bracelets and waist beads. I see this young lady going far in her entrepreneurial journey!

Taylor and her mom were very excited and deserving as she was the winner of a prize package of $14,397 to support her college and future business endeavors, which included her doing a segment on WUSA channel 9 this past Monday morning!

She is being mentored through her business and we plan to update you all later on throughout Miss Taylor’s business journey. In the meantime, follow her on Instagram: @beadzfrmtay

Entrepreneurship: On The Outside Looking In

How many know that being an entrepreneur is more work than what most people think it is???

It’s blood, sweat and tears… sometimes literally!!! Some think it’s just you selling your product or services and you make money….!! πŸ˜‚πŸ€£

Looking at it from the outside, sure that’s what it looks like. However, sometimes people have good reasons for becoming an entrepreneur, some may not be the taking directions from a supervisor or manager on a 9to5 type and would much rather lead and oversee…OR maybe the person is super creative and choose to make the decisions on “what” and “how” they want things done. You have some who would rather just have more time in their day vs sitting in an office all day building up someone else’s empire so they choose to do what it takes to build their own.

Either way you look at it, it’s not always easy. I saw this image below and thought to myself…a 3rd holiday home?? But I got the message….😊

It definitely takes hard work and dedication. It’s also a good idea to have a good marketing plan and having “tough skin” to be able to maintain your sanity most times helps too.

You may even lose some people along the way that may not understand your journey or may not even believe in your goals, some may not even LIKE the way you do things! You will go through many ups and downs but if entrepreneurship is what you are seeking and you are passionate about it, don’t give up!

All I can say is stand strong on what you believe in and stay surrounded by successful, positive beings and those who are genuinely in your corner!

2018 Winding Down

I don’t know about you, but it seems like 2018 flew by us! I feel like 365 days in a year is just not enough time to reach all of my goals…Yes, I said it! More time is needed in the year, an extra weekend day to be exact! πŸ˜‰ Whoever said time waits for NOONE…NEVER lied!

There are some things we may not have been able to make a reality this year, and that’s OK, we have a whole entire new 365 days ahead of us to get focused and make changes. If it’s healthy eating habits, business goals or a project at home you said you would finish…we still have time!

So what this means is we don’t have to be so hard on ourselves for not doing some things we said we would do this year instead, let’s commit to making those things a priority and plan to make 2019 a better year.

Take a minute to take a look back at all of the positive things you were able to make happen, all of your accomplishments, then go into 2019 with a whole new outlook and a newΒ  set of goals, and remember if you weren’t able to finish the year strong, we have a whole new 365 days approaching us!

How Important Is It For You To Create A Vision Board

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it’s time to get back focused on creating what we see in our future and what we’ve been working so hard to accomplish all year, its Vision Board time! Whether you are creating an actual board and pasting photos of your dreams and goals to post in your bedroom or office to see first thing in the morning, or you are creating an album with all of your visions on each page OR you are creating a virtual vision of your dreams and goals for 2019, we have options.

I can say I have only created a vision board once, I created an actual board with cut outs from magazines. However, for me, it was difficult to find everything I needed in magazines to complete my vision, which was a little frustrating. This year I’ve decided to create a virtual vision collage I can share as my screensaver on my phone, that way I could always look at my vision and stay motivated for my next move and make my goals a reality for this upcoming year!

Here are a few free apps you can use to create your virtual vision board:

  1. Canva
  2. Pic Collage
  3. Layout
  4. Adobe Spark

How important is it for you to create a vision board for your goals this coming year??

Steve Harvey talks to Oprah about how important a vision board was for him.

“Man if I didn’t have a Vision Board, I’d be in trouble!”

Helping the Community

Thanksgiving is all about giving. A lot of us spend time with our families and friendsFB_IMG_1542123194741_edited and share how thankful we are for having food on the table, a roof over our heads and anything else we are thankful for.Β  However, there are many families that are not as fortunate and would be grateful to have a decent dinner for their family to enjoy. It’s also a good idea to get our children involved in helping those in need. With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, we are getting involved and helping a family in need and would love for you to join us!

Business Minded Women, B.M.W has partnered with BeYouSocial for the Adopt-A- Family Thanksgiving Drive. Our organizations both believe it giving back. Join us by helping our Adopted Family have a great Thanksgiving dinner this year by making a donation whether it is food or monetary, no donation is TOO BIG or TOO small.

Drop off your (perishable, non-perishable and monetary) donations this Friday evening. at Ruby Tuesday’s in Clinton, Maryland.

If you can’t make it in person, but would still like to provide your support we are accepting donations online via paypal or cashapp.

Paypal donations can be sent to:

Goal Setting 2018

Why does it seem like every time we have a great idea and we get super excited about it we then go into…THIS IS GOING TO BE MY YEAR mode!? After about 6 months in you’ve forgotten all about that idea and the goals you set for it because another idea has kicked in! It happens to the best of us. I’ve learned to write down my ideas and tosmart goal setting hand drawn on blackboard set REALISTIC goals that I can work on little by little. It’s easy to get drained trying to work on everything at once, so spread out your goals and work hard to accomplish them.

This year, I’ve worked hard to achieve the goals I set for myself and my businesses. It hasn’t been easy though, especially when you want to do so much! I was able take some time to look at my growth personally and spiritually, and realized that I’d made some great strides in all areas but still have work to do. I didn’t necessarily hit every goal I set for myself, nevertheless, I’ve found new ways to work that helps me manage my time better and I’ve learned you cannot do EVERY thing at once! No matter what others are doing you have to do what works best for you. No matter what the goal is business or personal, it’s usually just me working to become a better version of myself because with personal growth comes business growth. I was able to make some great things happen that I was proud of this year, now it’s time to finish out the year and think more about where I want to be in the next few years to ensure my businesses flourish.

A few things I was able to do was to launch my online boutique, offer my customers some new things and to start my own line…this was a start…but there was still so much more I needed to do! I even started working on a few in-person interviews to spotlight some of the areas hardest working entrepreneurs earlier this year, which is something I will continue and was a great experience!

However, we all know nothing happens overnight as bad as we would like for them to, it just doesn’t. There was so much more I wanted to accomplish this year, for instance, publishing more blog posts. I KNOW…I KNOW, but now that I’ve worked on my time management, I can share more great business topics and some of my own business experiences. I’m not afraid to say that I didn’t do everything I wanted to do, but THIS IS MY YEAR!! (inserts sarcasm)

I shared all of this with you all to say, as long as you’re working hard and moving toward the goals you you want to accomplish you can make anything you want happen and at anytime you want…OK, maybe not all of what you want to do but there’s always time to get focused! Write everything down, use time management to do a little at a time and work hard to make things happen!

Slow progress is better than no progress at all. Less procrastinating and more goal setting then knocking those goals out will get you closer to where you want to be for 2019!

Why is In-person networking so difficult for women entrepreneurs?

I don’t believe social media alone is what makes you a successful business owner.

So I posed this question in my Facebook group because I’ve been there and wanted to hear what others felt. I learned that some women have a fear of rejection and not being prepared enough, some say we’ve lost the ability to be social and be ourselves by relying on social media and hiding behind our devices, some people are introverts and for some it could just be difficult talking to others about their business especially when you’re just starting out.

I’m learning, in my own experiences, that networking is a big part of becoming a successful business owner. I’m still a work in progress, as we all are, but it has become so much more easier when I released my fears and stepped out on faith. These days I feel like I can talk to anyone about my business and people say, “Wow, I had no idea you were doing so much!” when people say that, I say to myself I definitely need to network more, OFFLINE!

Yes, networking can be daunting, but that’s a part of being a business owner, it’s not for everybody. Being able to overcome obstacles, not concerning yourself with rushing and not being quick to give up.

Another thing I’ve learned is having an “elevator pitch” and practicing it constantly is one of the best things you can do! It makes it easier to talk to people and within seconds you can have someone’s attention when at a networking event. This is something you can do on your own or with people in your circle, when you are out at an event you are able to introduce yourself and your business with in a few seconds; short and sweet. Networking OFFLINE is how people get to know YOU and who they are doing business with. It makes a difference. You should also know who to connect with and Do not worry about rejection because those can turn into approvals and things like, “LETS SET UP A MEETING” it’s really all about what your goals are and how successful you would like to be in your business.
